Gun is just what I needed. The story and the prose is lean and mean but with just a few brushstrokes Mr. Banks is able to capture both the criminal world of this novella as well as the mental state of the young protagonist, Richie - a bit of a criminal Holden Caufield.Richie makes mistake after mistake, but it is difficult not to like him. Banks justifies every bad decision. Those looking for a happy ending are reading the wrong genre but Richie's final realization of what he should have done makes it all the more dark and I think what raises it above the standard crime fiction.
Filled with colorful characters and conversations, this book is well worth your time.

Bought as a time passer while car was being repaired. Time went by in a very enjoyable fashion and looking at other titles by the author for my next relaxing time.
In a very rapid novella, more a short story really, with all the wished for ingredients in British crime fiction.
I highly recommed it for fans of the genre.
I really liked this book. It dragged me around and wouldn't let go until I finished the book. Think dark Brit crime movies, like "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" and you won't be far off. Wow. I will read LOTS MORE by this author!
A great, short read about a simple job that goes wrong for a down-on-his luck kid looking for some quick cash. I loved the snappy dialogue and the almost lyrical nature of the prose. There is a lot of UK slang, but it's very easy to follow in context for yanks like me and it gives the novella a very grounded, gritty feel. Highly recommended.
Richie just got out the joint and now he's sent to get a gun for Goose. Getting the gun was the easy part. Getting it to Goose is the challenge.
I found this story to be very dark and gritty, yet the author does an excellent job of humanizing Richie. Stories like this makes me love noir. I highly recommend this novella.
This is a great British crime story that I couldn't down. Characters were believable with realistic dialogue. Not a word is wasted, nothing in the story is irrelevant; no violence or sex just for the sake of violence and sex. I'm a fan of authors like George Higgins, David Goodis, Charles Willeford, and Jim Thompson. If you like those authors I would suggest reading this book.
This was a perfect example of why the British do crime thrillers better than anyone else in the world. Ray Banks takes what could have been a rather dull tale and turns it on its head with scene after scene of violence and blood. The dialogue was awesome (once I worked out what a few words meant - being an Aussie made it tricky in a few spots!) and the pace of the action was just about spot on.
