My mother read me this book when I was a little girl. Every night I looked forward to the next chapter. Despite the name, this is NOT a "chick book." The kids have wonderful adventures that include gypsies and a formidable "Aunt Jane." The children are named for constellations...Diana, Apollo, Orion. I will ALWAYS remember how much I loved this book and lived vicariously through its characters each night at bedtime. I haven't seen the book in 43 years. Wish I could afford to buy one of these.

I remembered reading this when I was a child. It's a lovely Victorian relic of a much more innocent time. As a child I totally missed the hint of "American exceptionalism" inserted near the end. It was fun to re-read it as an adult. I'm not sure what the original target reader age was as the book belonged to my grandmother.
A great read and hard to put down. For those who like a sensitive and well written book with real characters. Easy to relate to the characters and emotions
My mother read this book to me when I was a little girl. I read it again when I could read. It has always been one of my very favorites. Beautifully written.
